Fans who subscribe to “Your Name – Topic” never see your next release in their feed. An Official Artist Channel merges every channel you have into one, marked with a music note, and the company that already delivers your songs can request it.

Can you get the music note badge without a label?

Yes. There is no form for artists to fill in at YouTube; the request comes from a label, a distributor or a Music Service Partner. An independent artist already has the right partner: the distributor that sends your songs to streaming services. Without a label or distributor, YouTube says to “reach out to a Music Service Partner who can request an Official Artist Channel on your behalf” (YouTube Help, read October 2026).

Route Who files the request What you need first
Distributor The service that delivers your releases A plan that includes the request, and a release live on YouTube
Music Service Partner A music company listed in the YouTube Services Directory Your music delivered to YouTube through that partner
Label The label’s YouTube contact A signed deal, which the first two routes do not need

The directory is your safety net. The YouTube Services Directory lists music companies that work with YouTube directly, “from track delivery for YouTube Music to revenue and royalty payouts”. Check it before you choose a distributor.

Why does the auto-generated topic channel cost you fans?

Because a subscription to a topic channel delivers nothing. YouTube builds “Artist Name – Topic” automatically, and fans can subscribe to it, but YouTube Help says that subscription “will not add any videos to your subscriptions feed” and “you won’t get notifications from topic channels” (Find music from artists you like). Your most loyal listeners may be following a channel that can never tell them about a release.

What the fan gets On the topic channel On the official channel
New videos in the Subscriptions feed No Yes
Notifications None Bell or highlights, as the fan chooses
Subscribe button Removed once the official channel exists Yes, on the merged count
Who runs the page YouTube, automatically You

The audience is there to win. On YouTube Music, listeners discovered an artist new to them more than 450 million times in July 2026, across a catalog of over 300 million songs (YouTube blog, September 23, 2026).

Every one of those discoveries is a fan who can subscribe. Make sure the subscribe button they press belongs to a channel that reaches them.

What does YouTube check before it approves the request?

Four things, and the fourth is a choice of four. The channel must belong to one artist or band and focus on their music, carry at least one official release delivered by a distributor or label, and comply with YouTube’s policies. Then it needs one partner link: a Partner Manager, Partner Program membership, a label network, or a distributor listed in the Services Directory.

  • One act per channel. YouTube’s wording is “a single artist’s or band’s YouTube channel that is focused on the artist’s or band’s music”.
  • One official release. It must be delivered and distributed by a music distributor or label; a song you upload yourself does not count.
  • A clean record. Community Guidelines, Terms of Service and copyright policies, all three.
  • One partner link. For most independent artists this is the distributor itself, when it is in the directory, or Partner Program membership.
Tip

Upload at least one public video before you ask. YouTube’s help page warns that requests “for channels with no public videos uploaded may be rejected or require additional verification”.

Your distributor can ask for more than YouTube does

YouTube’s bar is one release. A distributor sets its own bar for filing, and it can be higher. One large distributor’s help center (updated January 2026) offers the request only on its paid Pro and label plans, and asks for:

  • at least three published videos on the channel, mainly of one artist’s music;
  • at least three releases active on the topic channel;
  • an artist’s channel, never a label, genre or compilation channel.

Read your distributor’s page first. If its plan or release count rules you out, the Music Service Partner route is still open.

How do you request it, step by step?

Deliver a release, upload a public video, then ask the company that delivered the release. The request is filed from your distributor’s side, through its dashboard or its support team, and the distributor passes it to YouTube with your channel link. Most of the waiting happens before you ask: the release has to be live on YouTube first.

  1. Deliver a release through your distributor. Include YouTube Music among the stores, and wait until the release is live on YouTube under your artist name.
  2. Pick the channel that will become official. It must be yours, about one act, and free of strikes. Official Artist Channels are created from existing channels, so this is where your subscribers will gather.
  3. Upload the official video to it, publicly. That is the public video YouTube asks for, and the page fans will find from search.
  4. Check your distributor’s rules. Plan, release count and video count, as above.
  5. File the request. Give your distributor the channel URL. If it cannot file, contact a Music Service Partner from the directory.
  6. Watch for the music note. It appears next to your channel name once the request is approved, and the subscriber merge follows.

Make step three count. Sprizzy puts that official video in front of people who already watch artists like you, targeting by keywords, similar channels, location, age and gender on YouTube’s own ad platform, from $50.

What happens to your subscribers when the channels merge?

They move onto one count. When the Official Artist Channel is created, YouTube merges subscribers from your topic channel, your Vevo channel if you have one, and your existing channel into it. The old channels stay findable in search but lose their subscribe button, and YouTube notes that “you may see an increase in your Official Artist Channel subscriber count as we consolidate your audience.”

A worked example. Say your own channel has 600 subscribers and your topic channel has 300. After the merge both audiences sit on one count of up to 900; a fan who followed both channels counts once.

What the fan had What happens after the merge
A subscription to your topic channel Subscribed to the official channel automatically
A subscription to a partner-provided channel Subscribed automatically; that channel’s bell setting can carry over
Notification settings on the topic channel Not carried over (topic channels send none)
Subscriptions to several of your channels One active subscription; the old ones go inactive

Why YouTube merges them: “Your subscribers will see your new music videos regardless of whether they subscribed to your Official Artist Channel or your other channels. This merge should help you promote and distribute new music more effectively.”

Tip

A count that jumps after approval is the merge at work. If a count falls for another reason, here is how to read a subscriber drop.

What do you give up, and what gets the badge suspended?

One Studio tool, and the badge itself whenever a strike is active. YouTube’s help page says an Official Artist Channel “may lose access to other features available exclusively to non-OAC channels, such as Ask Studio”. The channel also “will be suspended and become a standard channel if it gets a Community Guidelines strike or has content with limited features.”

Suspension is not permanent. The channel returns to official status automatically once no strike is active, no video has limited features, and it still meets the other criteria.

Music note Verification check mark
Subscriber minimum None in YouTube’s criteria 100,000
Who applies Your distributor or a Music Service Partner You, in YouTube Studio settings
What it unlocks Merged subscribers, Analytics for Artists, merch and ticketing tools No extra features
What removes it A strike or limited-features content, until cleared Changing your channel name

The check-mark column comes from YouTube Help, Verification badges on channels: verified channels “don’t get extra features on YouTube”.

What should you do in the first week after the music note appears?

Tidy the channel, open the new analytics, then grow the merged audience while it is paying attention. Fans now reach this channel when they search your name or watch your official videos, so the first week is when most new visitors meet it. Three jobs matter: presentation, measurement and reach.

  • Fix the name. Match your release name exactly. YouTube’s artist channel guide advises against adding “Official”, “TV”, “Channel”, “YouTube”, “Music” or “Productions”.
  • Use the first link. Of up to 14 channel links, the first sits beside the subscribe button. Point it at your newest release.
  • Set two spotlight videos. One for new visitors and one for returning subscribers.
  • Open Analytics for Artists. Total Reach counts your songs inside fan uploads and collaborations, and “Fastest Moving Songs in Shorts” ranks songs by growth in Shorts creations against their 13-day average (YouTube Help).

Close the gap to YouTube’s 1,000-subscriber shelf

The spotlight shelf. The help page lists one more program, “Artist on the Rise”. Emerging artists in Canada and the US with over 1,000 subscribers are automatically eligible for its 24-hour slot on the Music Explore page.

There is no application. YouTube looks at view count, watch time growth and how often you upload, and the featured channel carries a blue badge for the day (YouTube Help).

Close the gap with a launch. A campaign on your official video is the fastest way to reach the new fans you still need. Sprizzy campaigns start at $50, target fans of similar artists, and your first one carries a money-back guarantee.

Campaign views appear in YouTube Analytics under the “YouTube advertising” traffic source, so you can see exactly what the launch added. Here is how a Sprizzy campaign works.

Before you start, read how the first 100 subscribers arrive; the same habits carry a merged channel to 1,000.

Common questions

How long does it take to get an Official Artist Channel?

YouTube does not publish a review time. The clock starts once your release is live on YouTube and your distributor or Music Service Partner files the request with your channel link. Before it is filed, check that the channel has a public video and covers one act only; YouTube warns that requests for channels with no public videos may be rejected or need extra verification.

Can I get an Official Artist Channel by uploading my songs myself?

No. YouTube requires at least one official music release delivered and distributed by a music distributor or label. A song you upload to your own channel is an ordinary video, not an official release. Deliver at least one single through a distributor that includes YouTube Music, then upload your official video to your own channel and request the Official Artist Channel from that distributor.

Do I need 1,000 subscribers or the Partner Program to qualify?

No subscriber minimum appears in YouTube's criteria. Partner Program membership is one of four partner links that satisfy the last requirement; the others are a YouTube Partner Manager, a label network, or a distributor listed in the YouTube Services Directory for music. Most independent artists qualify through the distributor that already delivers their releases, long before they reach monetization.

Will I lose subscribers or videos when my channels merge?

No. YouTube merges subscribers from your topic channel, any Vevo channel and your existing channel into the Official Artist Channel, and the count may rise. Your videos stay where they are. The old topic channel remains findable in search but loses its subscribe button, and fans who followed it are subscribed to the official channel automatically.

What is the difference between the music note and the verified check mark?

The music note marks an Official Artist Channel. Your distributor, label or a Music Service Partner requests it, and YouTube sets no subscriber minimum. The check mark is a verification badge you apply for yourself in YouTube Studio settings once you have 100,000 subscribers; YouTube says verified channels get no extra features. The music note comes with merged subscribers and artist analytics.

Can a band or a duo get an Official Artist Channel?

Yes. YouTube's requirement is a channel for a single artist or band, focused on that act's music, so a band or duo qualifies with one channel for the act. What does not qualify is a channel for a label, a genre or a compilation of several artists. Each act needs its own channel and its own official release.

Should I promote my music video before or after the music note appears?

Either works, because the merge moves every subscriber onto the official channel. Promoting the official video on the channel that will become official means every new fan lands on the count you keep. Sprizzy runs that video as an ad on YouTube's own platform from $50, targeting fans of similar artists by keywords, channels, location, age and gender.
