How Do You Get Into YouTube’s Shorts Bonus Program?

YouTube's Shorts bonus program is invite-only. How the two payments work, the 15th-of-the-month rule, what a valid engaged view is, and what to do next.

YouTube began paying a monthly Shorts bonus in October 2026. The rules below come from YouTube’s own terms: who gets invited, how the two payments work, which deadlines decide whether a month pays, and which Shorts never count.

Why can’t you apply for the Shorts bonus program?

Because YouTube picks the channels, and there is no form. Its help page says the program “is invite-only and there is no application process” (YouTube Help). If your channel is chosen, two things happen: an official invitation goes to your primary contact email, and a notification appears in YouTube Studio. You then accept the invitation and the program’s terms inside Studio by the deadline it names.

Where to look. YouTube’s FAQ says an eligible channel will find an “Active bonuses card in YouTube Studio under the Earn tab.” No card, no invitation. Creator Support “can’t manually invite channels or accept applications,” so a support ticket cannot open the door.

  • Who is eligible. Channels already in the YouTube Partner Program, in the six countries named in YouTube’s announcement: the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Brazil, Japan and South Korea.
  • Who picks. YouTube calls it “a limited, automated invite-only pilot.” It has not published the criteria the automation uses.
  • Who is next. The same FAQ says that if you were not invited in this first phase, “there will be more opportunities to participate as we scale in 2027.”

The only place an invitation shows up is your inbox and the Earn tab in Studio. Check both before you plan a month around it.

How is the monthly bonus calculated?

In two layers. YouTube’s terms describe a minimum payment, the “Promotional Offer Payment,” for uploading at least the number of public Shorts your invitation specifies in a calendar month. A second amount, the “Promotional Bonus,” is based on your valid engaged Shorts views that month and on “the typical earnings in your country.” One sentence in the terms is worth reading twice: “You are not guaranteed receipt of a Promotional Bonus.”

Payment What earns it What YouTube says
Promotional Offer Payment (the minimum) Uploading the minimum number of public Shorts named in your invitation, every calendar month of the promotion period Earned when the invitation’s requirements are met before the end of the month
Promotional Bonus (the extra) Valid engaged Shorts views that month, “as determined by Google,” scaled to typical earnings in your country Not guaranteed; recalculated every month; “the more valid engaged Shorts views you receive, the more you can potentially earn”

The amounts are not public. YouTube has published no rate, cap or minimum. The Shorts count, the promotion period and the money are set in each invitation, so two channels in the same country can hold different offers.

Validation comes first. Google checks each channel’s engagement numbers before the bonus is shown. Validation “may take several days to complete, and final validation may vary from what you see elsewhere, such as YouTube Analytics.” A gap between Analytics and the paid total is expected.

Tip

Your country sets the rate. The bonus is pegged to typical earnings where your channel is based, and YouTube ties Partner Program eligibility to the country under Settings, Channel, Basic info in Studio (YouTube Help).

What counts as a valid engaged Shorts view?

A view where someone stayed, from a source YouTube considers organic. YouTube defines engaged views as “how many times viewers stayed to watch past the initial seconds, not including any loops” (YouTube Help). For the bonus, the FAQ narrows it further: valid engaged Shorts views “are calculated using only organic engaged views,” and views “generated or sourced from advertisements do not count toward your monthly totals.”

What that means for a promotion. The ad play itself is not in the bonus total. What a promotion does is put your Short in front of people who choose to watch, and their later organic watching counts.

Tip

YouTube’s name for that later watching is Follow-on Views: “organic views you get when someone watches your videos after seeing your promoted content.” That is the mechanism Sprizzy runs on: the ad finds the audience, the organic views that follow are yours.

  • Counted. Organic engaged views of public Shorts during the calendar month.
  • Not counted. Views sourced from ads; loops of the same Short; views YouTube’s Shorts policies call ineligible, such as “artificial or fake views” from bots and views of non-original Shorts (YouTube Help).
  • Where to read it. YouTube says the Engagement tab in your channel’s Analytics includes your “Engaged views” metric, which is the number the bonus is built on. The public view count is a different figure and counts from the first frame.

Why the distinction is sharper. In Metricool’s study of 799,718 videos from 71,177 accounts, Shorts views rose 127% between February 2025 and February 2026 while viewers spent three times less time on each Short (Metricool, July 2026). The bonus pays for the seconds.

The bonus is paid on engaged views, so a Short that is swiped past in the first second earns nothing, however many times it was shown.

Which deadlines decide whether a month pays?

Three dates in each calendar month, and missing the first moves the whole month. YouTube’s page says you “must accept the invitation by the 15th of the month for your Shorts activity to count for that month”; accept after the 15th and your activity counts in the following month. The upload minimum must be met before month end, and you must “continue to be monetizing at the end of that same month.”

  1. Accept by the 15th. Open the Active bonuses card under Earn in YouTube Studio and agree to the terms. Acceptance on the 16th means your first counted month is the next one. You opt in once for the whole bonus period.
  2. Upload the minimum before month end. Only public Shorts count toward the number in your invitation. Schedule the last one with days to spare rather than hours.
  3. Be monetizing on the last day. The payout condition is your monetization status at month end, so a monetization suspension that lands on the 30th costs the month.
  4. Wait for validation. Google validates engaged views over several days. The number it pays on can differ from Analytics.
  5. Get paid with everything else. The bonus is added to your finalized earnings for that month and paid through AdSense for YouTube, “typically between the 21st and the 26th of the following month,” subject to the normal payment threshold.

A worked month. Accept on November 10 and have the last required Short public by November 27. Validation runs in early December. If your finalized November earnings, bonus included, reach the payment threshold, $100 in YouTube’s example, the payment arrives between December 21 and 26.

Under the threshold? The balance “rolls over to the next month” and is paid once it crosses (YouTube Help).

Watch out

Google can change, cancel or suspend the program “for any reason with 30 days’ notice,” and immediately for legal, security or abuse reasons. Treat it as a bonus on top of a plan, never as the plan.

Which Shorts quietly fail to count?

The ones that are not public, not original, or blocked. The upload minimum is written as public Shorts, and YouTube’s qualified-views rules say private, unlisted and deleted Shorts do not count (YouTube blog, August 2026). The quietest failure is a copyright claim on a Short longer than a minute: YouTube blocks it worldwide, and a blocked Short is “not eligible for monetization” (YouTube Help).

The Short What happens What to do
Over one minute with any active claim, including a manual claim Blocked globally; not monetizable; no engaged views Keep claimed audio under a minute, or use Audio Library tracks: most run up to 90 seconds in a three-minute Short, some only 60 or 30
Unlisted or private Not a public Short; no qualified views Publish as public before month end if you want it counted
Non-original, such as an unedited clip of someone else’s content Views ineligible under the Shorts monetization policies Add your own commentary or edit; reuploads earn nothing here
Outside advertiser-friendly guidelines Views ineligible for revenue sharing Check the yellow icon in Studio before counting it toward the month
A Short that is also a loop magnet Only the first play counts; loops are excluded from engaged views Build for the stay past the first seconds, not the replay

The timing trap. A claim can arrive after upload. A 61-second Short that was fine on the 3rd and claimed on the 20th is blocked from the 20th, with no channel penalty, only the block. A 59-second cut keeps playing.

Count a Short toward the month only when it is public, original, unclaimed, and shows no restrictions in Studio.

How do you get more engaged Shorts views in a month?

Get shown, then get kept. Studio splits a Short’s performance into those two halves. Shown in feed is “the number of times that your Shorts showed in the Shorts Feed,” and Viewed vs swiped away is the percentage of those showings where viewers watched rather than swiped (YouTube Help). Engaged views sit downstream of both.

  • Fix the first second before anything else. A swipe never becomes an engaged view. Open on the moment the title promises, not on a logo or a greeting.
  • Upload at the cadence your invitation asks for, as public Shorts, spread across the month. The Feb 2027 activity rule treats five Shorts every 90 days as an active channel, so a bonus month is well above the floor.
  • Give new Shorts a first audience that chose to watch. Sprizzy promotes a Short in the Shorts feed through YouTube’s official ad platform, targeted by keywords, similar channels, location, age and gender, real viewers only, no bots, from $50. The viewers it reaches then watch your other Shorts on their own, and that organic watching is what the bonus counts.

What a promotion shows you. A Shorts ad counts a public view “the moment the video playback starts” (Google Ads Help), and Analytics can take 72 hours to catch up. Then watch Follow-on Views in your traffic sources, the promotion’s organic tail.

Tip

If a new Short sits at a handful of views for days, the feed has not shown it yet, and that is a reach problem, not a verdict. Here is how to read a stuck Short and give it its first audience.

A low Shown in feed number is a reach problem; a low Viewed percentage is a first-second problem.

How does the bonus fit the February 2027 Partner Program changes?

As a fourth rule beside three others, and each applies to a different channel. Today a channel joins the Partner Program with 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days (YouTube Help). From February 1, 2027, new applicants need 8,000 qualified watch hours or 20 million qualified Shorts views, and existing members keep their status (YouTube Help).

Rule Who it applies to The number
Joining YPP from Feb 1, 2027 New applicants 1,000 subscribers plus 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days, or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days
Shorts revenue sharing from Feb 1, 2027 Members earning from Shorts ads Maintain 10 million qualified Shorts views over the last 90 days; missing it does not remove you from YPP or touch long-form earnings
Staying active from Feb 1, 2027 All members 1,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days, or 1 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, or two long-form videos or five Shorts every 90 days, with a 90-day window to recover
Shorts bonus program Invited members in six countries The Shorts minimum in your invitation each month, paid on organic engaged views, while monetizing at month end

Where the pages stop. The bonus page requires monetizing at month end; the Partner Program page says missing the 10 million pool rule does not remove you from YPP. YouTube has not said whether channels below that rule are invited; plan on the published rules.

If you were not invited. The qualified views behind every rule are the same organic engaged views the bonus pays on, so the work is identical: put each Short in front of people who choose to watch, and let their organic viewing count.

Tip

Sprizzy campaigns start at $50 and your first one carries a money-back guarantee. The February 2027 rule and the current requirements each have their own full guide.

Accept your terms in Studio by January 31, 2027 to keep monetizing fully after the change, bonus or no bonus.

Common questions

How do I know if I was invited to the Shorts bonus program?

YouTube sends an official invitation to your channel's primary contact email and shows a notification in YouTube Studio. The surest check is the Earn tab in Studio: an eligible channel sees an Active bonuses card there. If the card is absent, the channel was not invited in this phase. Creator Support cannot add a channel or accept an application, so there is nothing to request.

Can I apply for the YouTube Shorts bonus program?

No. YouTube describes it as a limited, automated, invite-only pilot with no application process. It is open to selected Partner Program channels in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Brazil, Japan and South Korea. YouTube has not published the selection criteria. Its FAQ says channels not invited in the first phase will get more opportunities as the program scales in 2027.

How much does the Shorts bonus pay?

YouTube has published no amounts. Each invitation sets its own public-Shorts minimum, promotion period and payments. The minimum payment is earned by uploading that number of public Shorts in a calendar month. The extra bonus is calculated from your valid engaged Shorts views that month and the typical earnings in your country, and YouTube's terms say it is not guaranteed. Expect it to change every month.

Do views from ads count toward the Shorts bonus?

No. YouTube's FAQ says valid engaged Shorts views use only organic engaged views, and views generated or sourced from advertisements are excluded from the monthly total. What a promotion contributes is the audience it introduces: viewers who find your channel through an ad and then watch your Shorts on their own produce organic engaged views, which YouTube labels Follow-on Views, and those are counted.

What happens if I miss the upload minimum one month?

That month pays nothing, and the next month starts fresh. YouTube says the bonus is calculated on a monthly basis and depends on uploading at least the number of public Shorts in your invitation before the month ends, while still monetizing at month end. Private and unlisted Shorts do not count toward the number, and a Short over one minute with an active copyright claim is blocked and not monetizable.

Does the Shorts bonus replace Shorts ad revenue sharing?

No, it is paid on top. YouTube's terms say the Promotional Offer Payment and any Promotional Bonus are paid during the monthly payment cycle along with your other YouTube earnings, through AdSense for YouTube, typically between the 21st and the 26th of the following month. The normal payment threshold still applies, so a balance below it rolls over to the next month.

Does the bonus change the February 2027 monetization thresholds?

No. The bonus is a separate pilot for invited members. From February 1, 2027, new applicants need 1,000 subscribers plus 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, and members earning from Shorts ads must maintain 10 million qualified Shorts views over 90 days. Existing members keep their status. Every creator must accept the updated terms in Studio by January 31, 2027.
